Retrofit Scheme

The Measures and Support Division, within the Ministry for European Funds, Equality, Reforms and Social Dialogue (MEES) has announced a new aid scheme “Retrofit” which has launched on the 1st of May 2024. Retrofit aims to support investments to tackle heavy upfront expenses associated with renovating buildings in the private sector, more specifically, commercial buildings. Moreover, the objective of this scheme is to diminish energy demand, carbon emissions and energy waste together and thus enhance overall energy efficiency. This grant scheme is open to undertakers who are looking to reduce energy utilized for heating, cooling, ventilation, hot water and lighting. The building renovations carried out are intended to result in a minimum 30% decrease in Primary Energy Demand (PED).

The scheme will be given through a Standard Scale of Unit Cost per square meter and is dependent on not only size, but also, locality and percentage reductions in PED. Enterprises together with those Voluntary Organisations listed under the Office of the Commissioner for Voluntary Organisations and the Malta Business Register are eligible to receive up to €5 million for the energy minimizing renovations listed.

This scheme is extended till the 31st of December 2024, with the following periodical cut off dates: 28th June, 1st July, 30th August, 30th September, 31st October, 29th November and 31st December.
